Quality – It’s in the Daily Dirty Details

How can you quickly improve the quality of your business? How do you know if another business is really focused on quality?

If you want to quickly evaluate the quality of a business, just note the cleanliness, neatness, and aroma of its bathrooms and dumpsters.

Have you ever been to a restaurant, gone to the restroom and observed over flowing garbage cans, been distracted by watery and soap soaked counters, felt slippery, greasy floors, smelled unpleasant odors, and even had to hover with no supplies at hand? Have you and had to wipe your feet before you left the establishment?  If that is the bathroom, what is the condition of the kitchen where your food is prepared?

Have you ever been behind a store and seen the dumpster dirty and overflowing with garbage on the ground?

When I began high school and started my first job, I worked at a steak restaurant. On a regular basis we were required to scrub and clean the garbage cans inside the restaurant. And, not only garbage cans, but also the dumpster outside. Why the dumpster? After all it is out behind the restaurant – who cares? Right?  Wrong!

My manager drilled into us that for some customers that may be the first view of the restaurant and maybe the first impression. And, what about the refuse collector? I am sure he has seen it all – and he has some stories. What story do you want your refuse collector to say about you and your business?

Why is this important? Because the care businesses take with its bathrooms and dumpsters is a sign of their attention to other details of their business --- the care and details with their employees and staff, their culture, and their service -- their care and attention to you the customer!

If you are a business looking to improve quality, start with your bathrooms and dumpsters, your customers will notice!
